Freeport, Maine is the small town generally known as the birthplace of the state of Maine. It was founded as a small parcel of land attached to the town of North Yarmouth in the late 18th century. In fact, the town was freed from North Yarmouth on the Fourth of July in 1889, the date that coincides with our nation's independence.

Freeport, Maine is situated on the Atlantic Coast, which has allowed it to thrive on the fishing industry. In addition to fish and lobsters coming in from the cold Atlantic waters, the town has made a living building ships, which it still continues to this day. Be sure to visit the historic shipbuilders on your next trip to Freeport to see how ships were built in the “good old days.”

Freeport, Maine is just 20 miles from Portland and only about a two hour's drive from Boston. The drive from Boston during the fall months when the foliage is especially gorgeous is an enchanting experience. It is the best way to get the beautiful feel of fall in the Northeast. However, the quickest way to visit Freeport is to fly directly into Portland and then make the drive from there. It takes just half an hour to make the trip one-way.

L. L. Bean is undoubtedly the most popular attraction in this beautiful Maine town. It is the flagship store and factory that makes incredibly durable outdoor outfits. LL Bean has an indoor trout pond and rock climbing wall. It remains open 24 hours a day each and every day a year. So, you can visit it at your convenience and see the place where it all began.

The whole of Maine is suitable for those of you wanting a quality outdoor time with your family. There are many trails, parks in the surrounding areas of the town for biking, hiking and walking. You may find some of these inside the town as well. Try to tame the Bradbury Mountain, as it summit offers a picturesque view of the whole surroundings. If coming here with your family, be sure to include some outdoor activities so that your and your family spends some quality time together and your kids learn what Mother Earth is all about.

Wildlife lovers have great sights to watch and experience in Freeport. Bird watchers from all over the country and abroad come here to watch the vast and diverse variety of birds. Home to the Atlantic seals, Maine offers you to see the seals in their native environment if you plan to go on a seal boat tour. Also make a trip to the Sequin Island Lighthouse or Eagle Island.

For more encounters of the animal kind, schedule a visit to Wolfe’s Neck Farm. This fantastic 600 acre farm raises animals naturally without any hormones or antibiotics. A visit to Wolfe’s Neck Farm is a great way to see exactly how organic cattle and sheep grazing works and understand how eating this untreated meat is better for your body.
